Grade 2 Listening practice
5 Grade 2 listening lessons, including which one doesn’t belong?, listen for details, listen for order, spell what you hear, story problems by ear. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Which one doesn’t belong?
Good listeners notice groups: fruits, animals, colours.
Tip: Find what three words have in common.
Step 2: Listen for details
Details are small facts: who, what, how many, what colour and where.
Tip: Make a picture in your head while you listen.
Step 3: Listen for order
Words like first, next, then and last tell the order of events.
Tip: Listen for the order words.
Step 4: Spell what you hear
Some words are not spelled the way they sound, so we learn them by heart.
Tip: Picture the word in a book. Which spelling looks right?
Step 5: Story problems by ear
Listen for the numbers and the action: got more means add, ate or gave away means subtract.
Tip: Picture the story in your head.
