Grade 1 Listening practice
5 Grade 1 listening lessons, including hear the number, hear the opposite, rhyme time, who did it?, what came next?. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Hear the number
Tens come first when we say a number: forty-seven is 4 tens and 7 ones.
Tip: Listen for the tens word (like forty) and then the ones word (like seven).
Step 2: Hear the opposite
Opposites mean completely different things, like hot and cold.
Tip: Think of the word that means the reverse.
Step 3: Rhyme time
Rhyming words end with the same sound.
Tip: Say the word, then say each choice. Do the endings match?
Step 4: Who did it?
Listen for who did the action in a sentence.
Tip: The doer usually comes before the action word.
Step 5: What came next?
Listening for order words like first, then and last helps you remember.
Tip: Hold up a finger for each thing you hear.
