Grade 6 Listening practice
5 Grade 6 listening lessons, including longer directions, directions with negatives, percents by ear, fact or opinion?, summarize a talk. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Longer directions
Longer directions need focus. Track the number after every step.
Tip: Count the steps on your fingers so you know when you are done.
Step 2: Directions with negatives
Careful listeners keep track even when numbers go below zero.
Tip: Use a number line in your head.
Step 3: Percents by ear
10% means divide by 10. 25% is a quarter. 50% is half.
Tip: Turn the percent into an easy fraction first.
Step 4: Fact or opinion?
A fact can be checked and proved. An opinion is what someone thinks or feels.
Tip: Words like best, prettiest and should often signal an opinion.
Step 5: Summarize a talk
A summary of a talk gives the main point and key details in a sentence or two.
Tip: Avoid answers that are just one small detail.
