Grade 5 Listening practice
5 Grade 5 listening lessons, including catch the details, follow the steps, fractions by ear, main idea by ear, why is this being said?. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Catch the details
Announcements have important details: times, places, amounts.
Tip: Listen for numbers and write them in your head.
Step 2: Follow the steps
Do one step at a time and keep the new number in your head.
Tip: Say each new number quietly after each step.
Step 3: Fractions by ear
A fraction of a number: half of 24 is 24 ÷ 2.
Tip: Divide by the bottom number, then multiply by the top.
Step 4: Main idea by ear
The main idea is what the whole talk is mostly about, not one small detail.
Tip: Ask: which answer covers all the sentences?
Step 5: Why is this being said?
Speakers talk to inform, to persuade or to entertain.
Tip: Is it giving facts, selling an idea or making you laugh?
