Grade 2 Language practice

8 Grade 2 language lessons, including action verbs, adjectives, plurals with -es and -ies, group words, compound words, contractions and more. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.

Step 1: Action verbs

A verb is an action word: something you can do.

Example: Which word is a verb (an action)?

Tip: Try putting "I can" in front of the word. "I can jump" makes sense!

Step 2: Adjectives

An adjective describes a noun: what kind, what colour, how many.

Example: Which word is an adjective (a describing word)?

Tip: Try "the ___ dog". If it describes the dog, it is an adjective.

Step 3: Plurals with -es and -ies

Words ending in s, x, sh, ch or z add -es. Words ending in a consonant + y change y to i and add -es.

Example: one lunch, many ___

Tip: Say it out loud: "boxes" has an extra sound, so it needs -es.

Step 4: Group words

Some nouns name a group: a herd of cows, a flock of birds, a school of fish.

Example: Which group word fits? a ___ of players

Tip: Think of the animal or thing, then the group it belongs in.

Step 5: Compound words

A compound word is two small words joined to make a new word.

Example: sun + ___ = a real word

Tip: sun + flower = sunflower.

Step 6: Contractions

A contraction squeezes two words into one. An apostrophe (') takes the place of the missing letters.

Example: Which contraction means "it is"

Tip: do + not = don't. The apostrophe sits where the o was.

Step 7: Belongs to ('s)

Add 's to show something belongs to someone: the dog's bone, Maya's hat.

Example: The tail belongs to the cat. Which is correct?

Tip: Who does it belong to? Add 's to that word.

Step 8: Myself, yourself, themselves

Words ending in -self or -selves point back to someone: I made it myself.

Example: Which word fits? They built the fort ___ .

Tip: I → myself. You → yourself. He → himself. She → herself. We → ourselves. They → themselves.
