Grade 8 Listening practice
5 Grade 8 listening lessons, including six-step directions, relevant evidence, claim and evidence, tone and purpose, spot weak reasoning. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Six-step directions
Experts can follow long chains of instructions with focus.
Tip: Repeat the current number to yourself after each step.
Step 2: Relevant evidence
Evidence must connect directly to the claim, not just be true.
Tip: Ask: if this is true, does it make the claim more convincing?
Step 3: Claim and evidence
A claim is what a speaker wants you to believe. Evidence is the proof they give.
Tip: Evidence usually has numbers, research or examples.
Step 4: Tone and purpose
Tone is the speaker’s attitude. It helps you understand why they are speaking.
Tip: Listen for strong words. They reveal the attitude.
Step 5: Spot weak reasoning
Some arguments sound convincing but use faulty logic, called fallacies.
Tip: Ask: does the reason actually prove the claim?
