Grade 2 Writing practice
6 Grade 2 writing lessons, including build a sentence, choose a strong word, time order words, opinion sentences, give a reason, parts of a letter. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Build a sentence
Most sentences go: who, what they did, then more details.
Example: Which sentence is in the right order?
Tip: Find the naming word first, then the action.
Step 2: Choose a strong word
Strong action words help readers picture exactly what happens.
Example: Which word makes the sentence more exciting? She ___ when she heard the joke.
Tip: Went, got and was are weak. Choose the word that paints a picture.
Step 3: Time order words
Words like first, next, then and finally put events in order.
Example: Which word fits best? We ate lunch. ___ we played outside.
Tip: First starts, next and then are in the middle, finally ends.
Step 4: Opinion sentences
An opinion tells what you think or feel. Words like I think, best and favourite are clues.
Example: Which sentence gives an opinion?
Tip: Could someone disagree? Then it is an opinion.
Step 5: Give a reason
Good opinion writing gives reasons that explain why.
Example: Which sentence gives the best reason? Dogs make great pets.
Tip: Ask: does it answer WHY?
Step 6: Parts of a letter
A friendly letter has a greeting, a body, a closing and your name.
Example: Which part tells your news?
Tip: Dear… starts it. Your friend, or Love, ends it.
