Grade 1 Writing practice
6 Grade 1 writing lessons, including capital i and names, complete sentences, choose the end mark, add a describing word, stick to the topic, steps in order. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Capital I and names
The word I is always a capital letter, and so are names and the first word.
Example: Which sentence is written correctly?
Tip: Check the first word, every I, and every name.
Step 2: Complete sentences
A complete sentence tells who or what, and what they do.
Example: Which is a complete sentence?
Tip: Ask: Who? Does what? A complete sentence answers both.
Step 3: Choose the end mark
Telling sentences end with a period, asking sentences with a question mark, and exciting ones with an exclamation mark.
Example: Which end mark fits? Where is my backpack
Tip: Is it telling, asking or exciting?
Step 4: Add a describing word
Describing words (adjectives) tell what something is like: happy, juicy, giant.
Example: Which describing word fits best? I ate a ___ apple.
Tip: A describing word answers: what kind?
Step 5: Stick to the topic
Every sentence in your writing should be about your topic.
Example: Which sentence belongs in a story about MY BIRTHDAY?
Tip: Ask: is this sentence about my topic?
Step 6: Steps in order
How-to writing tells the steps in the order you do them.
Example: How to wash your hands: which step comes FIRST?
Tip: Act it out in your head. What do you do first?
