Grade 1 Language practice
8 Grade 1 language lessons, including capital letters, special names, end marks, nouns, plurals with -s, is or are? and more. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Capital letters
Use a capital letter at the start of a sentence and for names of people, places and days.
Example: Which sentence uses capital letters correctly?
Tip: Ask: is this the first word? Is it someone's or somewhere's special name?
Step 2: Special names
Special names of people, pets, places and days start with a capital letter: Maya, Toronto, Monday.
Example: Which one is a special name?
Tip: Is it the name of one special person, place or day? Give it a capital.
Step 3: End marks
Every sentence ends with a mark: a period (.) for telling, a question mark (?) for asking, and an exclamation mark (!) for strong feelings.
Example: Which mark ends this sentence? That was so much fun ___
Tip: Read the sentence out loud. Does your voice go up like a question, or sound excited?
Step 4: Nouns
A noun is a person, place or thing.
Example: Which word is a noun?
Tip: Can you put "a" or "the" in front of it? Then it is probably a noun.
Step 5: Plurals with -s
Plural means more than one. For most words, just add -s.
Example: one tree, three ___
Tip: One cat, two cats. One book, three books.
Step 6: Is or are?
Use "is" for one and "are" for more than one: The dog is big. The dogs are big.
Example: Which word fits? The apples ___ red.
Tip: One → is. More than one → are.
Step 7: Yesterday words with -ed
Add -ed to many action words to show it already happened: Today I jump. Yesterday I jumped.
Example: Which word fits? Yesterday I ___ the ball.
Tip: If it happened yesterday, look for -ed.
Step 8: Question words
Who asks about a person. What asks about a thing. Where asks about a place. When asks about a time.
Example: Which question word fits? ___ is the park?
Tip: Who → person. Where → place. When → time. What → thing.
