Grade 8 Writing practice
6 Grade 8 writing lessons, including parallel structure, dangling modifiers, keep a formal tone, explain your evidence, answer the other side, strong conclusions. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Parallel structure
Items in a list should have the same grammatical form.
Example: Which sentence uses parallel structure?
Tip: Make every item match: all -ing words, all to-verbs, or all adjectives.
Step 2: Dangling modifiers
A describing phrase must sit next to the thing it describes.
Example: Which sentence fixes the misplaced modifier? Covered in mud, Mom washed the dog.
Tip: Ask: who is doing the action in the opening phrase?
Step 3: Keep a formal tone
Formal writing avoids slang and stays consistent from start to finish.
Tip: Spot the sentence that sounds like a text message.
Step 4: Explain your evidence
After evidence, explain how it supports your claim. This is called commentary.
Example: Which sentence best EXPLAINS the evidence? Claim: Recess should be longer. Evidence: Teachers reported better focus after 20-minute breaks.
Tip: Commentary often starts with This shows… or This means…
Step 5: Answer the other side
Strong arguments mention a counterclaim and respond with evidence, not insults.
Example: Which is the best response to the counterclaim? Claim: Our school should start a garden. Counterclaim: Some argue a garden costs too much.
Tip: A good rebuttal starts with however or yet and gives a reason.
Step 6: Strong conclusions
A strong conclusion restates the claim, sums up the reasons and leaves the reader with something to do or think about.
Example: Which is the strongest conclusion? Argument: Our town should build a public pool.
Tip: Avoid "That is my essay." End with impact.
