Grade 5 Writing practice
6 Grade 5 writing lessons, including fix run-on sentences, precise words, introductions, concluding sentences, paraphrasing, reliable sources. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Fix run-on sentences
A run-on squashes two sentences together. Split it, or join with a comma and and, but or so.
Example: Which fixes the run-on sentence? The store was closed we went home
Tip: A comma alone cannot join two sentences. That is called a comma splice.
Step 2: Precise words
Precise nouns and verbs paint a clearer picture than vague ones like stuff or went.
Example: Which revision is most precise? The food was good.
Tip: Replace stuff, thing, good and went with exact words.
Step 3: Introductions
An introduction hooks the reader and previews the main points.
Example: Which is the best introduction? Essay topic: the benefits of team sports
Tip: Look for a hook plus a clear main idea.
Step 4: Concluding sentences
A concluding sentence wraps up the paragraph and restates the main idea in a new way.
Example: Which is the best concluding sentence? Dogs make wonderful pets. They are loyal and love to play. Many dogs can learn tricks. They keep their families company.
Tip: A good ending connects back to the topic sentence.
Step 5: Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing means putting someone’s idea in your own words. Copying word for word is not paraphrasing.
Example: Which is the best paraphrase? Original: "Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours."
Tip: Keep the meaning, change the words and sentence shape.
Step 6: Reliable sources
Reliable sources are written by experts or trusted organizations and can be checked.
Example: You need facts about healthy eating. Which source is MOST reliable?
Tip: Ask: who wrote this, and do they know the topic?
