Grade 4 Writing practice
6 Grade 4 writing lessons, including stay on topic, smooth sentences, transition words, show, don’t tell, write a hook, strong reasons. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.
Step 1: Stay on topic
Every sentence in a paragraph should support the main idea.
Tip: Read the topic sentence, then check each detail against it.
Step 2: Smooth sentences
Combining short, choppy sentences makes writing flow.
Example: Which version reads most smoothly? The dog barked. The dog ran. The dog was brown.
Tip: Look for repeated words you can remove when combining.
Step 3: Transition words
Transition words show how ideas connect: time, addition, contrast, example or cause.
Example: Which transition fits best? I finished my homework. ___ , I went outside to play.
Tip: However means the opposite is coming. For example means an example is coming.
Step 4: Show, don’t tell
Instead of naming a feeling, show it with actions and details.
Example: Which sentence SHOWS that Leo is happy?
Tip: What would you SEE someone do if they felt that way?
Step 5: Write a hook
A hook is an opening that grabs the reader: a question, a surprising fact or action.
Example: Which is the best hook? Topic: an essay about sharks
Tip: Never start with "This essay is about…"
Step 6: Strong reasons
Strong reasons explain a real benefit or problem connected to the opinion.
Example: Which is the STRONGEST reason? Opinion: Reading every day is important.
Tip: Ask: does this reason actually help convince someone?
