Step 1: Fix fragments

A fragment is missing who or what, or what happened. Add the missing part.

Tip: Every sentence needs a who and a does.

Step 2: Join two sentences

Joining words like and, but, so and because connect ideas.

Example: Which joins the sentences best? Leo was tired. He stayed up late.

Tip: But shows a surprise. So shows a result. Because gives a reason.

Step 3: Topic sentences

A topic sentence tells what the whole paragraph is about.

Example: Which is the best topic sentence for these details? You can borrow books for free. Many libraries have computers to use. Librarians help you find what you need.

Tip: Read the details. Which sentence covers all of them?

Step 4: Use your senses

Sensory details tell how things look, sound, smell, taste and feel.

Example: Which sentence uses the sense of TOUCH?

Tip: Ask: which sense does this detail use?

Step 5: Writing dialogue

Quotation marks go around the exact words someone says.

Example: Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

Tip: Commas, periods and question marks that belong to the speech go inside the quotation marks.

Step 6: Plan your writing

Before writing, choose details that fit your topic.

Example: Which detail belongs in this piece? Topic: How to care for a goldfish

Tip: Cross out any detail that is about something else.
