6 Grade 7 writing lessons, including cut extra words, active voice, connecting ideas, thesis statements, reason or evidence?, objective summaries. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.

Step 1: Cut extra words

Concise writing says the same thing in fewer words.

Example: Which is the most concise version? Due to the fact that it was raining, we stayed inside.

Tip: Watch for phrases like “due to the fact that” and “in my personal opinion, I think”.

Step 2: Active voice

Active voice puts the doer first and is usually clearer and stronger.

Example: Which is the active voice version? The ball was kicked by Maria.

Tip: Find who did the action and start with them.

Step 3: Connecting ideas

Transitions like therefore, nevertheless and furthermore make the logic clear.

Example: Which word best connects the ideas? Bees pollinate crops. ___, farmers depend on them.

Tip: Result → therefore. Contrast → nevertheless. Add → furthermore.

Step 4: Thesis statements

A thesis states your position and previews your main reasons.

Example: Which is the strongest thesis for this essay question? Should students wear school uniforms?

Tip: A thesis takes a side. A fact everyone agrees on is not a thesis.

Step 5: Reason or evidence?

Reasons explain why; evidence proves it with facts, data or research.

Example: Which sentence is EVIDENCE? Claim: Students should learn a second language.

Tip: Look for numbers, studies or expert findings.

Step 6: Objective summaries

An objective summary states the main points without opinions.

Example: Which is an OBJECTIVE summary? Article: Scientists discover a new species of frog in Ecuador.

Tip: Remove words like amazing, best, I loved.
