Kindergarten Language practice

8 Kindergarten language lessons, including big and small letters, abc order, vowels and consonants, naming words, action words, one or more than one? and more. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.

Step 1: Big and small letters

Every letter has a big (uppercase) and a small (lowercase) shape.

Example: Which is the small letter for E

Tip: Some small letters look like their big letter, like O and o. Some look different, like G and g.

Step 2: ABC order

The alphabet always goes in the same order, from A to Z.

Example: u, v, w, ?

Tip: Sing the alphabet song quietly and stop at the right spot.

Step 3: Vowels and consonants

The vowels are a, e, i, o and u. All the other letters are consonants.

Example: Which letter is a vowel?

Tip: Sing it: a, e, i, o, u!

Step 4: Naming words

Some words name a person, an animal, a place or a thing: mom, cat, park, ball.

Example: Which word names a thing?

Tip: Can you point to it or draw it? Then it is a naming word.

Step 5: Action words

Action words tell what someone does: run, hop, eat, sing.

Example: Which word is an action?

Tip: Can you do it? Try it! Then it is an action word.

Step 6: One or more than one?

Adding s can mean more than one: one cat, two cats.

Example: Which word means just one?

Tip: Look for an s at the end.

Step 7: Start with a capital

Every sentence starts with a capital (big) letter.

Example: Which sentence starts the right way?

Tip: Look at the very first letter of each sentence.

Step 8: End with a period

A telling sentence ends with a period, like a little stop sign.

Example: Which sentence ends the right way?

Tip: Look at the very end. Is there a dot?
