Kindergarten Reading practice

8 Kindergarten reading lessons, including beginning sounds, ending sounds, rhyming words, word families, clap the syllables, sight words and more. Each one has a short video where Pip explains the idea, a worked example, and endless new practice questions with step-by-step help when a child gets stuck.

Step 1: Beginning sounds

Every word starts with a sound. Say the word slowly and listen to the very first sound.

Example: Which one starts with the sound of F f

Tip: Tap the speaker to hear the question again.

Step 2: Ending sounds

Every word has a last sound. Listen to the very end of the word.

Example: What sound does this word END with? ๐Ÿ” hen

Tip: Say the word slowly and stretch out the end: do-g.

Step 3: Rhyming words

Words that rhyme sound the same at the end, like cat and hat.

Example: Which word rhymes with ๐Ÿ”’ lock

Tip: Cover the first sound with your hand and say the rest: c-at, h-at.

Step 4: Word families

Words in the same family end the same way: cat, hat and bat are all in the -at family.

Example: Which word is in the -at family?

Tip: Look at the end of each word. Which one matches?

Step 5: Clap the syllables

Words have beats called syllables. Clap once for each beat: ba-na-na has 3.

Example: How many claps (syllables)? ๐ŸŒˆ rainbow

Tip: Put your hand under your chin. Each time your chin drops, that is a syllable.

Step 6: Sight words

Sight words are words we see so often that we learn them by heart.

Tip: Look at the first letter, then the whole word shape.

Step 7: Read and match

Blend the sounds together to read a word: c-a-t makes cat.

Example: Read the word. Which picture matches? cat

Tip: Say each sound slowly, then say them faster until you hear the word.

Step 8: Picture stories

Listen to a short story and look at the pictures. They help you remember.

Tip: Tap Read to me, then look back at the pages to find the answer.
